# Import and Export Projects

Export a project as a Clab JSON file to keep a transferable copy of its configuration. Import that file to create a project from the exported data.

## Export a project

1. Open a configured project.
2. Open the project toolbar menu and select **Export Project**.
3. Enter a filename and review the options for including the anatomical set and size chart.
4. Confirm the export and download the JSON file.

Project JSON exports use the **Pattern Design** unit selected in [User Preferences](/getting-started/main-menu.md#user-preferences).

Use [Generate Pattern](/getting-started/generate-pattern.md) when you need pattern files for CAD or a Tech Pack.

## Import a project

1. Open the project import dialog from the dashboard, or select **Import Project** in an empty project's toolbar menu.
2. Upload a Clab-exported `.json` file.
3. Review the project details and the anatomical set information.
4. If size chart data is included, review the available size chart import options.
5. Set any project tags and click **Import**.

Importing into an existing project is available while the project is empty, before an anatomical set and pattern configuration have been assigned. For an already configured project, start a new project from the dashboard.

Review the imported measurements, settings, and grading before generating pattern files.
