# Import and Export Projects

Export a project as a Clab JSON file to keep a transferable copy of its configuration. Import that file to create a project from the exported data.

## Export a project

1. Open a configured project.
2. Open the project toolbar menu and select **Export Project**.
3. Enter a filename and review the options for including the anatomical set and size chart.
4. Confirm the export and download the JSON file.

Project JSON exports use the **Pattern Design** unit selected in [User Preferences](/getting-started/main-menu.md#user-preferences).

Use [Generate Pattern](/getting-started/generate-pattern.md) when you need pattern files for CAD or a Tech Pack.

## Import a project

1. Open the project import dialog from the dashboard, or select **Import Project** in an empty project's toolbar menu.
2. Upload a Clab-exported `.json` file.
3. Review the project details and the anatomical set information.
4. If size chart data is included, review the available size chart import options.
5. Set any project tags and click **Import**.

Importing into an existing project is available while the project is empty, before an anatomical set and pattern configuration have been assigned. For an already configured project, start a new project from the dashboard.

Review the imported measurements, settings, and grading before generating pattern files.

## Transfer a template-based project

Exporting a template-based project includes the template adjustments needed to recreate its behavior. On import, Clab either reuses the matching available template in the same workspace or creates an independent entry in the destination workspace's template catalog.

Saved point adjustments are retained when present. The template's saved point adjustments and the current project's adjustments remain separate, so importing project-specific changes does not overwrite the source template's design.

Review anatomical-set and size-chart choices separately. Pattern Templates do not themselves assign grading. The destination workspace must support the template and its Pattern Type.
