# Work with Pattern Templates

A **Pattern Template** lets you reuse measurement customizations and piece configuration in other projects. Clab adapts the saved measurement adjustments to the project's anatomical set, while fixed design values retain their saved values.

Pattern Templates are available in enabled workspaces and for supported Pattern Types. The templates offered to you depend on the supported Pattern Types available in your workspace.

A Pattern Template defines a starting design. A [Size Chart Template](/size-grading/manage-size-charts.md) defines sizes and grading rules; assign it separately when you need grading.

## Create a project from a template

1. On the **Dashboard**, click **+** to add a project.
2. Enter the project name and optional code.
3. Select **From template**, choose a **Template**, add any tags, and create the project.
4. Open the project and review its anatomical set, measurements, piece configuration, and preview.

You can also open **Templates** from the dashboard and choose **Start from this template**. Use tags in the sidebar together with the Gender and Pattern Type filters to narrow the catalog. When selecting multiple tags, templates must have all of them. **Clear Filters** returns to the full available list.

From a template preview, choose **Start from this template** in the footer to open the new-project dialog with that template already selected.

Admins and Owners can use **View saved measurements** beside the linked-project button to review the measurements saved in a template.

The new project starts with the template's configuration and its existing anatomical set. The set's current measurements are used, so changes to that shared set can affect the result. If the original set is no longer available or compatible, the template cannot be used to create the project.

Templates do not include a size chart or grading rules. Configure these separately in the new project.

Where point editing is available, templates also retain saved adjustments to the original pattern points and whether those adjustments are applied. Proportional adjustments adapt to the destination project's measurements on supported pieces. Templates do not copy piece placement, added drawing elements, or independently created pieces. Review the resulting contours before generating files. See [Edit Pattern Points](/manage-a-project/manual-editing.md#change-measurements-after-editing).

## Save a project as a template

1. Open a configured project using a supported Pattern Type.
2. Open the **Project Settings** toolbar menu and choose **Save as template**.
3. Enter a template name, optionally add a description (up to 1,000 characters), and select workspace tags in the **Tags** card if needed.
4. Optionally select **Apply template to this pattern**. This applies the saved template to the current project and clears its entered measurement overrides; the anatomical set is kept.
5. If applying it, you can select **Save a version before applying** to preserve the previous state.
6. Confirm the save.

Members, Admins, and Owners can save a new template when the feature is available. Only Admins and Owners can overwrite an existing template with the same name.

Template tags organize the shared catalog. They are independent of project tags and are not automatically assigned to projects created from the template. When overwriting, existing template tags are kept unless you change the selection.

Descriptions help identify templates in the shared catalog. When overwriting, the existing description is shown for you to keep or edit. Clear the field to remove it.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Overwriting affects linked projects and saved versions.** They will use the updated template adjustments. Choose a new name to keep the existing template unchanged. Overwriting an archived template keeps it archived.
{% endhint %}

## Check the source template

Click the **template** badge beside the project name to see its name, profile, and original anatomical set and sample size. These describe the saved template's source; the project's current anatomy can be different.

Admins and Owners also have shortcuts to template management and **View saved measurements** when the feature is available.

Projects created with **Use as reference** show a **reference** badge instead. It identifies the saved source and, when available, links to the source project's current state. References are separate from the shared template catalog. See [Start from a Reference Project](/manage-a-project/reference-projects.md).

## Adjust a template-based project

Enter measurements as usual. An entered value takes precedence over the template's adjustment for that measurement. Clearing the entered value restores the template's calculation.

Changing the anatomical set keeps the template linked and recalculates the pattern for the new anatomy. Review the preview after changing either the anatomy or the pattern configuration.

## Apply or change a template

1. Open an editable project and the **Project Settings** toolbar menu.
2. Choose **Apply template**, or **Change template** if one is already assigned.
3. Select an available template for the same gender and Pattern Type.
4. Choose whether to **Reset entered measurements** and **Save a version before applying**.
5. Click **Apply template** and review the updated measurements and pieces.

Applying replaces the piece and group configuration and the original-point adjustments with those saved in the selected template. If that template has no point adjustments, the project's existing point adjustments are removed. Your anatomical set is kept, and entered measurement overrides remain unless you choose to reset them. Existing grading, piece placement, and other drawing elements remain; review that they still suit the new design.

## Disconnect a template

Choose **Disconnect template** from the **Project Settings** toolbar menu, review the warning, select the confirmation checkbox, and confirm.

The project returns to standard Pattern Type calculations. Its entered measurements, configuration, and grading remain, but calculated values and geometry may change. Saved versions in this project linked to the same template are also disconnected. Other projects and the catalog template are unaffected.

Changing Pattern Type or restarting the project also removes the current template association.

For shared catalog actions, see [Manage Pattern Templates](/workspace-and-team/pattern-templates.md).
